Some colorways arrive fully formed. Others have to be figured out along the way.
Summer’s End began with an idea: a self-striping colorway with the feeling of a watermelon at the end of summer—green giving way to white, then deep pink and lighter pink, before the colors turned and traveled back toward green.
Making it was a different story.
Self-striping yarn was new territory for me, so Summer’s End became a testing ground. I tried different ways of warping and tying the yarn, different ways of applying the dyes, and different ways of bringing all those colored sections back together.
No two skeins ended up exactly alike.

Knitted and photographed by Barbara Frederick using Summer’s End yarn from the September Ridge Collection. Shared with permission.
The result is a colorway that still carries the feeling I imagined, but also a little of the learning that went into making it.
Sometimes you have to make your way through the process to find the color you were looking for.
